Facades: Quai Branley
The facade of a building is what separates us from the raw elements of nature, but it is when nature interacts with the interior that an experience can be made.
The Quai Branly Museum in Paris uses colored resin boxes along with a mullioned glass wall on the north side of the building to create a space to both protect and enhance the precious artifacts housed within. Through the study of these materials I was able to better understand why having brightly colored resin boxes, that transverse the inside and outside, and a mullioned glass wall were useful.
While studying the exterior of the Quai Branly I noticed that the spaces on top of these resin boxes were wasted and could be used to enhance the cave like experience of being in such an expansive area.
The next part of the project involved redesigning part of the facade. Based on my earlier realizations, I decided to push the glass wall out to allow more space on top of the boxes; adding stairs and railings to provide a perch on which to look out upon the gardens below.
