(K)not Architecture
Inspiration for design can come from almost any object. This project addressed exploration of how a knot works by capturing instances of the motion of tying a knot through wire frame modeling.
Using the knowledge gained from the foray into knot tying, extensive studies into volumetric interpretaions of the knot were made with the emphasis on non-literal takes on the wire frame model.
One of the volumetric interpretations was chosen to be inverted and constructed to create a void within a solid. This was done through slicing a CAD model of the model on the previous page into layers and transferring the cutouts onto sheets of cardboard. Once the void model was completed it was cut to create a section of void.
The next step was to turn the void model into an inhabitable space. The first iteration was to make the model itself into a usable space. I chose to flip the model upside down to provide more useful surfaces for both the interior and exterior.
The second iteration was with a partner in which we combined our respective void models and were required to make a space that evoked a subterranean experience. I chose a space where our models connected because it provided a great spot for darkness and light to intermingle.
